Saudi Arabia is a huge Middle Eastern country that takes up most of the Arabian Peninsula. It may not be the first choice for family vacations, but we found it to be a fantastic and welcoming destination for a road trip adventure with our children.
Visas:
Good news for travelers! Visitors from 49 countries can apply for an eVisa for Saudi Arabia, and many of them can also apply for a Visa on Arrival. To enter, you’ll need an eligible passport, a valid eVisa, proof of onward travel, and the address of your accommodation in Saudi Arabia.
Getting to Saudi Arabia:
You can enter Saudi Arabia through four international airports with an eVisa or overland from the UAE and Bahrain. We crossed from Bahrain through the King Fahd Bridge border checkpoint, and it was a straightforward process.
Currency and cash:
The currency in Saudi Arabia is the Saudi riyal. Cash comes in notes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 riyals. ATMs are readily available, and we found NCB, Al Rajhi Bank, and Riyad Bank to be commonly used with international cards.
Language:
English is spoken in big cities, but in rural areas, English translations may be limited. Learning a few Arabic phrases like greetings and thank-yous is appreciated. The people of Saudi Arabia are hospitable and welcoming, even if you don’t share a common language.
Our itinerary:
We spent a month in Saudi Arabia, starting in the North, heading to the capital by train, flying west, and driving by rental car to the south. Distances between cities are vast, so planning your journey from either Riyadh or Jeddah is recommended.
