The Euphrates River drying up Islam is happening at a very unprecedented rate. A report from the leaders of Iraq who take care of water said in 2021 that the rivers might have no water by the time we reach the year 2040.
This is because there’s not enough water and the weather changes, making it very dry and there are many other factors too.
Euphrates River is among the four rivers that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) saw in his dream. Saihan, Jaihan, Euphrates and Nile are all among the rivers of Paradise. Sahih Muslim 2839
In a short time, the water in the Euphrates-Tigris rivers has become much less, almost half of what it used to be in the years when it hardly rained.
Pictures from space tell us that the land around the Tigris and Euphrates rivers lost a lot of water, about 144 cubic kilometers (34 cubic miles), from the year 2003 to 2013. This makes the water levels very low, the lowest they have ever been in the history we know.
As per a report from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Euphrates River is losing a significant amount of its water, about 30 percent each year.
The report mentions that the river is also getting increasingly dirty, which is a big problem for the health of people who depend on the river for drinking water and growing their crops.

Many people, as well as farmers and workers, depend on the river for water. The river drying up is causing a big problem with needing more water.
This is affecting the lives of the people in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Iran. Figuring out why the river is drying up is complex for many reasons. It’s interesting to see that Islam has talked about this a very long time ago, more than 1400 years.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “The Day of Judgment will not happen until the River Euphrates dries up, revealing a mountain of gold that people will fight over. In this struggle, ninety-nine out of every hundred individuals will lose their lives, and each one will think, ‘Maybe I’ll be the only one left alive.
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) tells us that the Euphrates River will be channeled into a different direction. So where there was water will come dry. There won’t be water flowing through there. And as a result, a mountain of gold will be revealed. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) mentioned gold, literally, gold. Jebel (Mount of Gold). Lots of gold will be revealed.
People of the world will fight each other over this. They’ll go to battles over this gold. He said, Don’t come near the gold to his Ummah, to us. Don’t go near it. From every 100, one will live in this battle. And each person will say, because everyone will see this catastrophe, every person will say, I’m going to be the one to live.
I’m going to be the one to live and take my portion. Whether this sign is going to happen before the major signs start, or whether they are going to happen within the time of the major signs is the knowledge of Allah SWT. That’s gonna happen with the Euphrates River, the sign of the ending of the world.

The Euphrates River is mentioned both in the Holy Quran and the Bible. And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and the other salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.” (Qur’an 25:53)

When the environment faces problems, it’s not good for people. Around 60 million folks in Turkey and Iraq depend on the Euphrates-Tigris River for water to live.
But since the 2000s, countries can’t agree on how to take care of this river area. This not only causes problems between local groups but also makes bigger fights between nations.
Now, there’s not just the worry about fights but also about diseases. In a paper from the British Medical Journal in March 2023, they looked into how Iraq is having health troubles because people can’t get clean water.
This leads to sicknesses like cholera, chickenpox, measles, and typhoid.
People have been worried about the Tigris–Euphrates drying up for a long, long time—since the times of the Bible. After thousands of years, it looks like those worries might actually happen.

People believe this river is very precious, especially to Fatimat az-Zahrathe, daughter of our beloved Prophet (ﷺ). The twelfth Imam Mahdi a.s. with whom the Prophet Jesus will come on the day when the curtains will be life from the eyes, it’s said that this river will flow in Kufa for everyone to drink from.
What’s interesting is that the Euphrates has a history. Many animals drank from it, and even tyrants had access to it.
But when you think about it, the grandson Imam Husain a.s. of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his family, got martyrdom with his 71 companions, among which there was Ali-Asghar a.s. Of, only three years old.

Impact on local communities.
Only a small piece remains in the far north of the Al-Hawizeh marsh, near the border of Iran and Iraq (known as Hawr Al-Azim in Iran). Sadly, even this last part is getting smaller quickly because its water is being held back by new dams and redirected for farming.
This isn’t just about nature; it’s also about people. The Marsh Arab community, who have been living in these marshes for thousands of years, is facing a big problem.
Around 40,000 of them are now in camps in Iran, and the others had to leave their homes in Iraq. This ancient culture, connected to the Sumerians and Babylonians from 5,000 years ago, is at risk of disappearing suddenly.
