In a profound response, when Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) was questioned about the underlying philosophy of prostrating on the earth, he eloquently conveyed:
“The prostration manifests our surrender and humility before the Almighty. Therefore, it should not take place on items associated with worldly desires like food and clothing, for humans often become slaves to their material possessions.
A prostration is an act of worship to Allah, and one’s forehead should not touch that which is revered by people, such as food and clothing and that which inflates human vanity.”
