These are the rewards and advantages of seeking forgiveness in this worldly life. Regarding the Hereafter, the benefits of seeking forgiveness are genuinely immense. In the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), numerous texts encourage us to seek forgiveness and emphasize its excellence. One such hadith, narrated by Anas ibn Maalik and reported by scholars like at-Tirmidhee in his Sunan, conveys the message of Allah’s mercy.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Allah, the Most High, declared, ‘O son of Adam! As long as you pray to Me and have hope in My forgiveness, I will pardon your transgressions, no matter how numerous. O son of Adam! If your sins were to reach the highest heavens and you turned to Me seeking forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! Even if your sins were as vast as the earth itself, but you came to Me without associating partners with Me, I would grant you an equal measure of forgiveness.”

There’s another tradition attributed to Imam al-Sadiq(a.s.). It says that if someone sincerely asks Almighty Allah for forgiveness by saying a specific prayer four hundred times every day for two months in a row, they may be blessed with a lot of knowledge or good fortune.

These are some sins (Astaghfirullah) that most of us nowadays are affected by. It wouldn’t be complete without all this, and some of us are unaware of these sins and think it is normal. No, my brothers and sisters, it is not normal. We are sick. Our soul is sick. This worldly life has made us all sick.
The Major sins of the heart.
An-Numan ibn Basheer related that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: In the body, there is a piece of flesh: if it becomes good, the whole body becomes good, and if it gets corrupt, the entire body gets corrupt; that is the heart.
Quranic Message of Destiny and Faith.
“After a period of hardship, Allah sent tranquility in the form of drowsiness upon some of you, while others were troubled by thoughts of ignorance—thoughts about Allah’s decree. They asked, ‘Do we have any control over our fate?’ Say, ‘Allah determines all matters.’ They hide within their hearts what they do not express to you.
They say to themselves, ‘If we had any control, none of us would have come here to meet this fate.’ Say, ‘Even if you had stayed in your homes, those of you destined to die would have still met the same end.’ Through this, Allah tests what is within you and purifies your heart. Allah knows best what is concealed in the hearts.” (Qur’an 3: 154)
“The false assumptions you held about your Lord have led to your downfall, and you are now in a state of loss.” (Qur’an 41: 23)
Abu Hurayrah (.) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Allah said: I am to my slave as he thinks of Me.
In another version, recorded by Al-Inad and Ibn Iibban, it was reported that he added (that Allah says): If he assumed good of Me, he will have it, and if he assumed evil (consequence and bad) of Me, he would have it.
Pride and mischief.
The abode in the afterlife, paradise, is reserved for those who do not rebel against the truth with arrogance and oppression on the earth nor cause harm by committing crimes. (Qur’an 28:83)
- The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “You don’t believe until you want for your fellow Muslim what you want for yourself.”
- He stated, “Your faith is not complete until your aspirations and desires align with what I have imparted.”
Allah says in the Quran, “If you have disagreements among yourselves, turn to Allah and His Messenger for guidance.” (Quran 4:59)
Allah also tells us, “Prophet Abraham is a great example for you to follow.” (Quran 60:4)
Hypocrisy and ostentation.
Allah SWT.
“Say, ‘I am just a human like you, but it has been revealed to me that your God is the only God. So, whoever hopes to meet his merciful Allah, let him do good deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.'” (Quran 18:110)
“Allah teaches us that to have a good meeting with Him, we should do good deeds and worship only Him. We shouldn’t do good things to impress people or get their praise.”
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that if we tell people about the good things we do to get their praise, Allah will know we didn’t do it for Him, and He will show our true intentions on Judgment Day.
He also taught us that our intentions judge our actions. If we have good intentions, our efforts will be good. But if we do good things to show off, Allah will see that, too.
The Prophet (ﷺ) gave examples of three people who did good things for the wrong reasons. One fought in a war to look brave, learned and recited the Quran to show off, and gave to charity to seem generous. Allah knew their real intentions and punished them on Judgment Day.
So, it’s essential to do good things sincerely for Allah, not to impress others.
Despair in Allah’s plan:
“No one can evade Allah’s divine decree except those who are genuinely in a state of loss.” (Quran 7:99)
“Never assume that Allah will not forgive you or that you can evade His divine plan. Allah is merciful, and only those who disbelieve in Him lose hope in His mercy.”
The worst sins are believing in other gods besides Allah, feeling too safe and unafraid of Allah’s plans, and giving up on Allah’s kindness.
So, always believe Allah’s mercy and never think you can outsmart His plans.”
Pride.
“Worship Allah alone and do not associate any partners with Him.” Be kind to your parents, relatives, orphans, people in need, neighbors—close and distant—your companions, travelers, and those under your care. Allah does not favor those who are arrogant and boastful.” (Quran 4:36)
“Allah disapproves of individuals who hold themselves in excessive esteem and boast. It’s as if Allah does not favor those who behave arrogantly and self-importantly.
The Quran warns that those who are excessively proud and show off will face severe consequences in the hereafter.”
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) once told us that even the tiniest bit of pride in your heart can keep you out of paradise. But understand, it’s about something other than looking nice or having nice things.
Allah loves beauty, too. It’s about being mean to others and thinking you’re better than everyone else. That’s what Allah doesn’t like.
And remember, if you’re humble and kind for Allah’s sake, you’ll be rewarded in the afterlife. But if you’re proud and disobey Allah, you’ll end up in the wrong place.”

In his book of al-Majalis, al-Mufid has reported the following narration from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah (Imam Ali’s son):
While the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) was circumambulating the Holy House (of Allah, i.e., the Ka’bah), he saw a man holding onto the curtains of the Ka’bah and praying to Almighty Allah with the following supplication.
“Did you compose this supplication yourself?” Imam Ali asked.
The man asked, “Have you heard it before?”
Ameerul Momineen (Imam Ali) answered, “Yes, I have.”
The man instructed, “Then, recite it after each prayer. I swear by Allah, any believing individual who supplicates to Almighty Allah with this prayer after their prayers will certainly be forgiven by Almighty Allah, even if their sins were as numerous as the stars in the sky, the drops of rain from the sky, the pebbles, and the stones of the earth.”
Imam Ali(a.s.) affirmed, “I am well aware of that. Allah is Generous and All-Knowing.”
The man, who was al-Khidr, added, “You, O Commander of the Faithful, have spoken the truth. I swear it by Allah. Indeed, above every knowledgeable person, there is One more knowledgeable.”
Transliteration: “Ya man laa yashghaluhu sam’un ‘an sam’in, Ya man laa yughallituhu assa’iloon, Wa ya man laa yubrimuhu ilhaahul mulihin, Adhiqnee barda ‘afwika wa maghfiratika, Wa halaawata rahmatika.”
How do you repent sincerely to Allah?
Acknowledging your mistake is the first step towards Tawbah, and feeling regret about your mistake is another step that brings you closer to Allah SWT. Confess your error to Allah while performing the obligatory prayer and commit not to indulge in that sin again.

I have made mistakes, but I have realized that Allah forgives our sins easily (I have felt this), but again, he is our Lord. He tested me for the same thing (which I had promised Allah I would stop), and I repeatedly made the same mistake. Allah will forgive you for your mistakes, but after that, he can test you If you do that thing or stay committed to your promise.
How do you repent for backbiting?
If you hurt someone, ask them to forgive you because Allah says in the Quran Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), “O you who have faith, do not mock or ridicule others, for perhaps they are better than you. This is the only solution. If you hurt someone, the best way to resolve everything is to ask for forgiveness from that person, and there is no shame in that. Trust me on this one.
“This verse encourages us not to mock or insult others, as it may involve sinful speech and harm to others. We will be held accountable for our words and actions on the Day of Judgment. Engaging in backbiting may lead to answering for the harm caused by our words.”
Can backbiting be forgiven by Allah?
Yes, Allah is the most powerful, the most merciful, And the most generous, and he loves those who ask for forgiveness and want to repent and trust Allah’s plan for the day of judgment when everything will be cleared to every eye in this world. I would do the following with sincerity.
- Sincere Regret (Taubah): The first step is to regret your actions sincerely. You should feel genuine remorse for backbiting and acknowledge that it was wrong.
- Stop the Backbiting: Commit to refraining from backbiting in the future. Make a firm intention not to engage in this harmful behavior again.
- Seek Allah’s Forgiveness (Istighfar): Ask Allah in prayer and seek His forgiveness. You can say a heartfelt prayer: “O Allah, I acknowledge my wrongdoing in backbiting. I seek Your forgiveness and Your mercy. Please forgive me for my sins.”
- Ask for the Forgiveness of the Person Backbitten: Try to make amends with the person you backbit. Apologize to them and seek their forgiveness for the harm you may have caused them.
- Charity and Good Deeds: Engage in charity and good deeds to earn Allah’s forgiveness. Acts of kindness and charity can help balance the harm caused by backbiting.
- Increase Your Good Deeds: Strive to increase your acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and reading the Quran. This can help you strengthen your connection with Allah and earn His mercy.
- Repentance and Consistency: Repentance is an ongoing process. Keep asking for forgiveness and consciously try to avoid backbiting in the future. Consistency in seeking forgiveness is critical.
- Trust in Allah’s Mercy: Remember Allah is the Most Merciful and Forgiving. Trust in His mercy and believe He can forgive even the gravest of sins if your repentance is sincere.

The act of seeking forgiveness is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Nuh (Chapter 71), Prophet Nuh (Noah) peace be upon him is instructed to tell his people: “Ask forgiveness of your Allah; indeed, He is ever a everlasting Forgiver.”
I know a lady who used to say “astagfirullah” (seeking forgiveness from Allah) more than 20,000 times daily. She believed that it brought her many benefits. One day, something remarkable happened after she lost her job and was thinking about starting a business but needed a specific amount of money.
She received a call from her friend, who told her she owed her money and wanted to return it. Surprisingly, the amount of money her friend returned was the exact amount she needed to start her business.
This story gave me goosebumps, reminding me of a verse from the Quran that says, “Ask for forgiveness, and I will surely increase your wealth.” It’s a powerful reminder of the belief that seeking forgiveness and turning to Allah can lead to unexpected blessings and opportunities.
