Remember that He promised, “If you are thankful, I will give you more, but if you are thankless, My punishment is terrible indeed. (Surah Ibrahim verse 7)

The Prophet () reminded us that women are equal to men in importance. So, just like men, women are also expected to follow Islamic manners. Together, they make up the Muslim community, and it’s through their actions that Islam is known.

These manners cover even the most minor things, like how we enter or leave a washroom, how we sit, dua for entering mosque, dua before eating, dua for thunderstorm, dua for thanking allah and how we keep ourselves clean etc.

In the time of the Prophet, a non-believer once teased Salman Al-Farisi (Companion of Prophet (), saying, ‘Your prophet taught you everything, even how to use the toilet.’

Salman replied, ‘Yes, the Prophet told us not to face the Qibla when using the toilet. He also advised us not to use our right hand when cleaning ourselves and to use at least three stones.

Hadith of Prophet importance of appearance

The Prophet () advised his companions to present themselves well, saying, ‘You are on your way to meet your brothers, put on a nice dress and fix your riding so you appear distinct among people as a fleck [on a beautiful face]. Allah does not like roughness or rough manners.

When the Prophet () mentioned that no one with a grain of arrogance in their heart would enter Paradise, he clarified that Allah appreciates beauty, including nice clothes.

Shaikh Ibn Taimia explained that Allah likes all good and beautiful things. Therefore, a Muslim should be recognized by neat dress, cleanliness, and a graceful appearance.

Islamic manners in visiting relatives

When you’re visiting someone or expecting guests, whether they’re your parents, relatives, friends, or even peers, make sure your hands, feet, and socks are clean and your clothes and appearance are tidy.

Please don’t overlook the importance of your appearance, as it can affect the joy of the meeting and the happiness of those you meet.

The Prophet advised his companions when they returned from a journey: ‘You are going back to your brothers, so dress nicely and fix your rides. Be a beauty mark among people, as Allah does not like sloppiness.’

Bring some gifts when you visit, and also offer presents to your guests. Be ready to reciprocate with a thoughtful gift. The happiness of seeing loved ones will be remembered for years, and even a tiny donation can significantly enhance the joy of the meeting.

The Prophet (), as reported by Bukhari, said: ‘Exchange gifts; exchange love.’ In the past, our Muslim predecessors would leave their hosts with a symbolic gift, like an Arak stick.

Significance of Muslim Identity

Wear nice clothes not only when meeting important people like your parents, elders, or pious individuals but also when you’re with friends or relatives. Ensure your clothes are clean and sound, as our appearance matters to people.

When you dress well and smell nice, others will enjoy being around you. But if you look messy, people might not think highly of you, even if you’re a friend or relative.

Looking good when visiting or being visited is a personal preference and part of Islamic manners.

Imam Bukhari shared in his book, ‘Al-Adab Al-Mufrad,’ that the wise follower Abi Al-’Alia Al-Riahi Al-Basri said, ‘Muslims were at their best when visiting each other.’

So, even if you’re visited at home and you’re dressed casually, consider changing for your visitor.

This will make them feel respected, and it’s a practice in line with the manners of the early Muslims.

Avoid clothing that resembles that of non-believers.

And then We set you, (O Prophet), on a clear high road in religious matters. So follow that and do notfollow the desires of those who do not know. (Surah Jathiyah verse 18)

The phrase ‘who do not know’ in the mentioned verse refers to everyone opposing the teachings of Prophet Muhammad’s () religion (Islam).

On the other hand, ‘their intentions’ point to the false beliefs and desires that non-believers follow in their faith. When Muslims adopt the whims of non-believers, they unintentionally show support for their religion.

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the book before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient. (Surah hadid verse 16)

The statement ‘We should not be unlike those to whom the book was given’ strongly prohibits us from imitating non-believers in general. Specifically, it warns against adopting their harshness, which arises from sinful behavior.

Avoid drawing attention or being overly showy.

The Prophet Muhammad () told us anyone who wears clothes to show off in this world will be given a garment of humiliation by Allah on Judgment Day; then, it will be set ablaze.

It means if the purpose of wearing these clothes is merely for the pleasure of showing off to others and feeling proud about the brands we wear, it is the root of evil, and it is strictly prohibited in Islam.

An overly showy or ostentatious garment is one that someone wears to stand out from others, either because the clothing is expensive or simple, with the intention of showing off.

Alternatively, a person may wear such attire to display their detachment from worldly possessions or to avoid hypocrisy.

Ostentation extends to colors as well. When a person wears clothes in bright and attention-grabbing colors to stand out or become the center of attention, it falls under the concept of showing off.

Conclusion

I hope it was clear, and Inshallah, by following this and making a habit of having these Sunnah in your life, you will also realize the benefits and the peace of mind it gives you.
